Fractal Geometry:
In 1958, Benoit Mandelbrot started his exploration of fractal geometry by using computer technology.
These repeating patterns in nature were first mentioned by Karl Theodor Wilhelm Weierstrass (October 31, 1815 - February 19, 1897),
a German mathematician who is often cited as the father of modern analysis. The Fractal shape is a geometric shape that can be split into parts, each a copy of the whole. The modern results of their efforts are present and used as the antenna for your cell phone.

Real World Problems:
The American Research Center in Egypt was the recipient of a grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The purpose of the grant was to lower the ground water in Luxor Egypt, thus protecting the antiquities located there while allowing for the continued production of food crops in the area. The tomb of Thutmose III (1479-1425), called the Napoleon of Ancient Egypt is located in the affected area. Other countries are challenged by the same water level issues.

Helicobacter pylori & re-awakening to the germ theory
The Italian, Agostino Bassi, is credited with having originated the germ theory of disease (micro-organisms can be the cause of diseases). His observation of a lethal epidemic in 1835 is heralded as being the birth of modern germ theory.
The discovery of Helicobacter pylori as the causative organism for stomach ulcers took almost 25 years to be recognized, due in part to the fact that the discoverers of this bacteria were from Australia. Dr. Barry J. Marshall and Dr. J. Robin Warren of Perth, Western Australia did not have a public relations machine. Consequently, the publication of their findings in 1982, took 23 years before they received credit and recognition when they were awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Earthquakes, Tsunami & Natural disasters:The earthquake in Japan demonstrated that there are no accurate global early warning systems for earthquakes with collateral precautions (i.e. the tsunami that followed) near highly vulnerable facilities (nuclear).
It also demonstrated the need for a system for the transference of existing construction techniques that could have assisted in mitigating the level of disaster experienced as a result of this tragedy. The earthquake or tsunami could not be prevented, but like many natural disasters, could be better predicted and planned for using existing technologies. Regardless of your status, rich or poor, everyone’s fate was the same; there was no discrimination.
